The conference "Tumors of the central nervous system in young children: difficulties in diagnosis, treatment prospects"

The interdisciplinary conference "Tumors of the central nervous system in young children: difficulties in diagnosis, treatment prospects" was held at the premises of the Scientific Research Center named after V.A. Almazov (St. Petersburg) during June 07-08. Our Center was presented by a neurosurgeon of the pediatric division Vasily Danilin with a report on “Analysis of brain tumors structure in children of a younger age group”.

Participants discussed problems of diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases of the central nervous system in young children during the conference. Currently, in neuro-oncology, in particular in pediatric neuro-oncology, the morphological forms of various tumors are being reviewed taking into consideration molecular and genetic studies that lead to significant changes in treatment process. In their reports and discussions participants discussed the prospects for the diagnosis and treatment of young children, taking into account the above mentioned changes.

Specialists involved in treatment of this group of children, such as neurosurgeons, oncologists, pathomorphologists and radiologists, took part in this conference. Only such an interdisciplinary approach to the multimodality therapy of children with central nervous system tumors will help further development of this area quickly and will provide an opportunity to the most high-quality assistance to such patients. Such events make it possible to improve a level of doctors’ proficiency, to share experience with colleagues, to be on to new technologies and treatment methods.
