The IIIrd Student Neurosurgical Olympiad

The IIIrd Students Neurosurgical Olympiad was held in the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) on December 09-11, 2021. The Program of the event included pre-meeting course on “The Basic microsurgical skills in neurosurgery” and the competitive program itself. During pre-meeting course the doctors of the Center were the faculties for 14 students telling them about the basic points of working with microscope, endoscopic and motor devices.

44 participants from different cities of Russia and neighboring countries participated in the competitive program. There were 6 contests grouped into 3 stages:

I stage. Qualification

1.    “Theory” contest

The students were offered to answer 100 theoretical questions in Russian and English. According to the results of theoretical contest top-20 participants passed into the 2nd round of qualification – “Microvascular anastomosis I”.

2.    “Microvascular anastomosis I”

Participants had to put anastomosis “end-to-side” type on chicken thighs models. According to the results of 2 contests top-10 participants were qualified for the II stage – “Practical part”.

II stage. “Practical part”

All the scores gained in the qualification were annulled before the start of this stage.

1.    “Microvascular anastomosis II”

A clinical case was offered for the participants and to put a microvascular anastomosis on the chicken wings models with imitation of the depth on end-to-end, end-to-side or side-to-side types with explanations.

2.    “Craniotomy”

Participants had to deal with clinical case and to perform craniotomy on 3D skull model explaining their choice.
     3. “Transnasal surgery”

Participants were offered to perform pituitary adenoma removal using endoscopic instruments and devices (boiled egg model fixed in the area of sella fossa of a 3D skull model. According to the results of the 3 practical contests were qualified for the final stage.

III stage. Final

1.    “Microsurgical aneurysm clipping”

Participants were offered to perform pterional craniotomy, arachnoidal dissection and microsurgical aneurysm clipping on 3D skull model with brain and vessels imitation.

All the participants showed their will to win, high level of theoretical and practical training.

Egor Orlov (Moscow) was ranked I. He was awarded with a participation in the pre-meeting course of the Siberian Neurosurgical Congress on intraoperational neurophysiological monitoring.

Ksenia Chizhova (St.-Petersburg) was ranked II and was awarded with participation in the pre-meeting course of the Siberian Neurosurgical Congress on application of intraoperational fluorescent angiography in vascular neurosurgery.

Egor Berezin (Volgograd) was ranked III and was awarded with the participation in the Siberian Neurosurgical Congress.

All other participants obtained diplomas and presents from the Olympiad partners.

Siberian Neurosurgical Association SibNeuro is planning to develop “Olympic movement” in neurosurgery. The IVth Olympiad is scheduled for December 2022.
