A Neurosurgeon of our Center took part in development of software to help in vessel placing during neurosurgical procedures

17 January 2023

The representatives of Fluid Dynamics Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences had developed software allowing determining optimal parameters of shunt placing for each patient individually during brain vessels shunting. Research of blood flow in difficult geometric vessels divergence was held together with the doctors of the Federal Neurosurgical Center in Novosibirsk.

“We had developed the program-assistant to a surgeon that could recommend where and under what angle a surgeon should place the shunt. Such recommendations are given on the basis of a surgeon’s manipulations under DICOM pictures of brain vessels of a patient and application of mathematic blood flow modelling”, - told Daniil Parshin, deputy to laboratory of unordered environment chief of the Fluid Dynamics Institute.

He explained that a surgeon having DICOM-pictures of a patient marks it following the program’s recommendations. According to the placed marks this program assistant creates a mathematic model of vessel network which detailing allows choosing an optimal variant of the shunt. Shunting is the main goal of a practical surgery where it is necessary to take into account the network geometry, vessel’s strength and other aspects.
