“Endoscopic Spine Surgery” Educational Course

16 January 2023

The educational course on endoscopic spine surgery was held on March 17-18, 2022 at the premises of the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk). This educational event had already become traditional and is held for the 4th time. It is meant for those doctors and specialists who begin mastering endoscopic techniques in management of spine diseases. The course is divided into 2 parts – lectures and practice.

Lecture part was presented by 7 reports (2 of them were presented online).

Dr.Igor V.Basankin presented 2 lectures:

1.     Endoscopic surgery of migrating disc prolapses on lumbar level.

2.     Comparison of treatment result of patients with discal hernia on lumbar level with the aid of microsurgical method and fully endoscopic technique.

Some clinical cases showing the advantages of endoscopic method in different variants of hernia sequester placing were also presented during the reports.

Dr.Yuliy E.Kubetskiy presented 3 reports:

1.     Lumbar spine endoscopic anatomy.

2.     Instruments for lumbar spine endoscopic surgery.

These two lectures were devoted to the initial stage of method mastering, to the basis of topographic anatomy of transforaminal approach and existent instruments necessary for lumbar spine endoscopic surgery.

3.     Experience of fully endoscopic dorsal foraminotomy in discal hernia on cervical level.

In this presentation spinal surgeons of the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) had demonstrated the possibilities of rarely applied method (in Russia, at least) in cases of degenerative and dystrophic diseases of cervical spine. This is a modern minimally invasive surgery of such pathology demanding longer studying for it application.

Dr.Roman V.Khalepa highlighted 2 topics in his reports:

1.     Endoscopic surgery of lumbar spine – intralaminar approach.

2.     Endoscopic decompression of spinal canal in lumbar spine stenosis.

These lectures were interesting by the fact that application of intralaminar endoscopic approach is similar to standard microsurgical discectomy and this method may be applied on the initial stage of endoscopy exploring. As for application of endoscopic decompression, on the contrary, it shows a high level of minimally-invasive surgery managing.

Practical part was dedicated to skills training on models and during demonstrating surgery (transforaminal discectomy, foraminal hernia removal, endoscopic decompression).

It’s worth to note that in 2022 the specialists of our Center were the first in Russia to use the models of Realists company during skills training course. RealSpine learning systems keep high visual and tactile reality. All the models of this system are elaborated with consideration to compatibility to a wide spectrum of a widespread medical goods.
