“The role of surgery in complex treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy” Conference

The Conference on “The Role of Surgery in Complex Treatment of Drug-resistant Epilepsy” was held at the premises of the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) on October 9, 2021 where the leading specialists in this sphere from Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Kemerovo and Novosibirsk presented their reports.

The conference highlighted topical issues of epileptology and perspectives of epilepsy surgery development in Russia. The report on “Perspectives of epilepsy surgery in Russia” was presented by Igor S.Trifonov, MD, a neurosurgeon of the A.I.Evdokimov’s Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry (Moscow). In his report Dr.Trifonov stressed the importance and high demand of additional epileptological centers in our country where patients could be examined and treated.

Dr.Viktoria G.Nezdorovina, the Chief of the division #2 of the V.A.Almazov’s National Medical Research Center (St.-Petersburg) told the audience about Perspectives of selective stereotactic destructions application in epilepsy treatment. Relatively new method of selective destruction of epi focal area was proposed by the specialists from the National Pirogov’s Medical Surgical Center. It involves thermal destruction of epi focal area by means of depth electrodes.

Dr. Anastasiya A.Khalepa, functional diagnostics specialist of the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) presented her report on Application and sensitivity of oval foramen electrodes. The doctors of our Center presented their reports on epilepsy surgical treatment complications, neuromodulation treatment methods, and special aspects of pediatric epileptology.

Dr.Andrey A.Zuev, MD, PhD, the Chief of the neurosurgical division of the National Pirogov’s Medical Surgical Center told about his clinical experience of treatment of unusual and interesting cases of temporal lobe epilepsy. Epileptologists of Novosibirsk shared their knowledge about achieved results of epilepsy surgical treatment and further management of such patients in Novosibirsk cohort.

An important question concerning continuation of drug-therapy of epilepsy after surgery was highlighted in the report of Dr.Diana V.Dmitrienko, MD, PhD, Professor, neurologist, epileptologist, the Chief of the Center of neurology, epileptology, neurogenetics and brain research of Krasnoyarsk State Medical University.

Reports dedicated to neuro psychological testing and conversion episodes detection were also presented during the conference.
