The doctors of Krasnoyarsk regional clinical hospital started surgery for management of Parkinson’s disease
02 March 2022

The specialists of Krasnoyarsk regional clinical hospital started surgery on management of Parkinson’s disease. This type of surgery is called deep brain stimulation. The first DBS case was performed on April 26, when the head of the functional division of our Center, Dr.Alksandr B.Dmitriev came to the hospital with a visit. He performed 3 cases.

Thanks to this type of surgery the quality of life of a patient with Parkinson’s disease improves significantly: tremor, stiffness, slow motions disappear. The surgery itself is very difficult with a technical side – electrodes are placed into deep brain structures; they block pathological impulses in subcortical ganglions. The electrodes are implanted inside via 2 small holes in the skull with the help of a very thin navigation device on special pathway. The patient is conscious during the surgery and a neurologist constantly tests the patient during this process.

The first patient being operated in Krasnoyarsk feels well. He admits that he already feels much better; he didn’t feel any pain though he was conscious during the surgery. The specialists plan to perform about 20 cases by themselves in 2021.

We are proud of our Krasnoyarsk colleagues. They are always ready to study and to implement new technologies in their practice. Similar experience exchange positively impacts the development of neurosurgery in the Siberian Federal District and in Russia as a whole.
