Participation of the employees of the Center on the annual Polenov’s Readings
02 March 2022

The “Polenov’s Readings”, the XIX Whole-Russia scientific and practical conference was held during March 31 – April 2, 2021 in St.-Petersburg.

Each year all leading neurosurgeons and doctors of related professions traditionally gather in St.-Petersburg to discuss the issues of neurosurgical and neurological pathology from the point of view of inter-disciplinary interconnection.

This year the conference was hold in the “Park Inn Pribaltiyskaya” hotel. During the days of the conference the following topics were discussed: pediatric neurosurgery, current studies of successful tactics of patients’ rehabilitation after severe craniocerebral injury; neuro anesthesiology and intensive care, neuro traumas. About a thousand participants were registered for the event.

The doctors of our center also presented their reports on the conference.

Vsevolod V.Luchanskiy, the Chief of anesthesiology and intensive care department presented his report on Clinical application of thromboelastography in selective neurosurgery” during the “Neuro anesthesiology and neuro intensive care” section. He introduced the clinical case of thromboelastography in selective neurosurgical practice, evaluated the rationality of this method application. He concluded that the method of thromboelastography was convenient and informative method of common evaluation of coagulative system function that was well correlated with the quality of surgical hemostasis.

Anton V.Kalinovsky, the Head of the Neurooncological division presented his report on the “Surgery of orbital tumors: a point of view of a neurosurgeon” during the plenary session. Orbital tumors are extremely rarely met pathology and they make 0,5% from primary tumors. Dr.Kalinovsky told the audience that the difficulty of tumors removal is caused by a small size of orbit filled with very important functionally significant structures (eye-ball, ophthalmic and oculomotor nerves, vessels, oculomotor muscles, lacrimal gland). Experience of lateral osteoplastic orbitotomy application in the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) on a large group of patients demonstrated high efficiency and good surgical and functional outcomes.

Aleksandr B.Dmitriev, MD, PhD, the Head of Functional division of the Center presented 2 reports. The first report was on “Non-resective epilepsy surgery. Is removal of brain tissue always necessary?” and the second one was on “Analysis of infectious complications in patients with implanted neurostimulators (DBS and SCS) and the role of antibiotic therapy in surgical site infections”. Dr.Dmitriev has analyzed the frequency of surgical site infections occurrence in post-op period in patients with implanted DBS and SCS systems and the role of antibiotic therapy in preventive treatment of these infectious complications. He marked that surgical site infections are rare but severe complication of neurostimulation implantation (DBS and SCS) that leads to its removal in the majority of cases. A critical period of infectious complications occurrence is 6 months.

Another doctor of functional division of our Center, Natalia P.Denisova toldthe audience about surgical complications of DBS-therapy. She highlighted the frequency and the structure of surgical complications in patients being operated in the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk) during the period from 2014 till 2020. All complications of DBS therapy were divided into 3 groups:

·         Complications connected with DBS system implantation;

·         Complications connected with crashing / dysfunction / infection of electrodes or generator;

·         Complications connected with the stimulation.

The specialists of different spheres of our center not only regularly take part in the Russian and foreign conferences but also hold hands-on courses, educational courses and seminars by themselves. Such events are useful for everyone: for participants and the audience. Exchange of experience between the colleagues will serve not only to promotion of professional skills but also will allow decreasing the chances of recovery and soonest rehabilitation of patients.
